In the city the population was spread out with 34.3% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.

History
Philomath was named after the Philomath College that was founded in 1867 by the United Brethren Church. The name of the college and city was drived from two greek words meaning "lover of learning". The city was incorporated in 1882, and the college, due to a dramatic decline in enrollment was closed in 1929.Geography
