The work is relatively short and a typical performance lasts just over 10 minutes.

The fact that the last movement is in the key of E-flat major rather than the tonic key of A-flat major is strong evidence that Schubert may have intended to add a fourth movement. At the time this was written it would have been just about unheard of for a sonata to end in a key other than its tonic.
