. Like other Pill Hills in the United States, Pill Hill in Brookline was nicknamed for its proximity to the hospitals in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area
and convenience for housing doctors.
The neighborhood is centered along High Street. Locals uncomfortable with the "Pill Hill" name have tried to rename it "High Street Hill." It includes Allerton and Cumberland Streets, Hawthorn, Glen and Edgehill Roads and Pond Ave. The neighborhood is bordered on the east by parks that include Leverett Pond. The parkland is part of the Emerald Necklace, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, which sets the border between Brookline and Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The land that makes up the neighborhood was part of Boston through the 19th century. The neighborhood has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places

The neighborhood is near Route Nine and just south of Brookline Village. To the south is "Whiskey Point," long a working-class Irish Catholic neighborhood that contrasted with the wealthier, mostly Anglo-Saxon Pill Hill.
Ironically, there are low-income housing projects located at the bottom of Pill Hill on High Street.
