Over the years, numerous parents and teachers have accused the facility of suffering from sick building syndrome

During most of 2006/07 school year, the kindergarten wing at PBE was evacuated due to deadly stachybotrys black mold, while these classrooms underwent total interior renovation. After work was completed, the kindergarten wing was declared safe and re-opened in Sept. 2007. However, parents continue to complain that their children have been getting sick frequently, for extended periods, suffering symptoms consistent with toxic mold poisoning. In late 2007, parents launched a website, fungusbusters.org, dedicated to exposing the school's 17-year history of indoor air quality health problems, scanning and posting stacks of hard-to-find public records detailing this issue.
