. The franchise began play in 2003 and is currently owned by Teresa Conn and Franco Harris. It is a licensed team in the Women's Football Alliance.

The Pittsburgh Passion is the most widely recognized women's football franchise in the world. It was the first women's football franchise in history to broadcast games on a major television network, with Fox Sports Net. It was the first franchise to be featured in Sports Illustrated and the first franchise to be featured on ESPN. The team has won 1 Undefeated National Championship as well as 3 Divisional Championships. The Passion was awarded a permanent fixture in the Heinz History Center's Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum in association with the Smithsonian Institution.
