. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 4,503. As of the 2006 census estimates, the population was 4,678.
, the township has a total area of 22.6 square miles (58.5 km²), of which, 22.4 square miles (58 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square mile (0.776996433 km²) of it (1.28%) is water.
Pigeon Creek runs through Port Sheldon to its terminus Pigeon Lake. Pigeon lake empties into Lake Michigan through a channel protected by two piers. There is a small harbor in the lake known as Port Sheldon. Consumer's Power operates a large coal based power plant which uses Pigeon Lake for cooling water.
