Prof. Pramod Tandon
Prof. Pramod Tandon (born 6 October 1950 is an Indian academic and the former vice-chancellor of North Eastern Hill University
. He is an eminent professor of botany. He received Padma Shri
award in 2009 in the field of Science and Engineering. He has been nominated as member of the high-profile National Advisory Council
(NAC) in June 2010.
, Uttar Pradesh. He received his B.Sc. degree in 1969 and M.Sc. (Botany) in 1971 from Lucknow University. He obtained his PhD degree 'on the process of gall induction in plants and the factors involved' from Jodhpur University in the year 1976.The seminal contributions of Prof. Tandon on gall tissues put forth the evidence that high levels of 'auxin protectors' account for both- the unregulated cell division and the anaplasia associated with tumor tissue.
Prof. Tandon has made outstanding contribution in mass micropropagation, reestablishment and recovery of Indian endemic plants from North-Eastern region of India that are critically endangered in their natural habitat. Besides developing protocols for rapid propagation of some forest trees and orchids, his research group has also developed an embryogenic system for afforestation of Pinus kesiya, which has tremendous application in clonal forestry. He has published more than 100 research papers and articles in journals of both national and international repute. He has edited 3 books on biodiversity and biotechnology.
A pioneer in establishing plant tissue culture facilities in Northeast India, Prof. Tandon trained and motivated scientists in the region to adopt modern methods of research. He also established the Bioinformatics Centre (funded by Department of Biotechnology, GOI) at NEHU in 1999, which has been extensively catering to the relevant IT requirements of the University and other institutions of the region and presently is the nodal centre for North-East Bioinformatics Network (NEBINet). The most significant aspect of his research is its direct relevance to societal needs and economic development of the people of the region.
Under his dynamic leadership as Vice-Chancellor, NEHU has received the distinction of 'University with Potential for Excellence' being one amongst the nine such Universities in the country. Prof. Tandon articulated, designed and implemented new initiatives that have become the foundation for making NEHU as a seat of higher learning successfully competing amongst the prestigious academic institutions. He has been able to secure more grants for NEHU than ever before for infrastructure development and improving the quality of education.
In addition to his position as Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tandon helped in establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong as its Project Director. The 96thIndian Science Congress hosted during January 2009 by NEHU was the first ever Science Congress held in the entire North-Eastern region that was inaugurated by Hon'ble Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh.
Presently he is an eminent Professor at the Department of Botany, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

Career
In 1977 he joined NEHU as a faculty in Botany. He was awarded the prestigious National Scholarship for Study Abroad by Government of India (GOI) and worked as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California, Irvine, USA during 1978–'79 and studied the genome organisation and expression of chloroplast DNA. During 1989 to 1995 he was invited by National Institute of Agrobiological Resources, Tsukuba and several Universities in Japan for research work that led to a long-term collaboration on Plant Conservation Biotechnology.Prof. Tandon has made outstanding contribution in mass micropropagation, reestablishment and recovery of Indian endemic plants from North-Eastern region of India that are critically endangered in their natural habitat.
