The President of the University of the Philippines is elected for a single six-year term by the University's twelve-member Board of Regents. As of 2005, two Americans and 17 Filipinos served as President of the University of the Philippines.

Former Alumni Regent and UP Alumni Association (UPAA) President Alfredo E. Pascual was elected as the 20th University President during the Presidential Election by the Board of Regents on December 3, 2010, receiving six out of eleven votes from the Board. According to a memorandum issued on the same day by the Office of the Secretary of the University and of the BOR, Pascual’s term will be from February 10, 2011 to February 9, 2017.
