Prix Jean Prat
Encyclopedia
The Prix Jean Prat is a Group 1
flat
horse race
in France
open to three-year-old thoroughbred
colts
and fillies
. It is run at Chantilly
over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early July.
.
Both legs of the Prix Biennal were given a new title, the Prix Jean Prat, in 1940. This was in memory of Jean Prat (1847–1940), a successful racehorse owner and breeder. The three-year-olds' version was switched to late May or early June in 1961, and it was shortened to 1,850 metres in 1962. It was transferred to Chantilly and cut to 1,800 metres in 1967. The present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, and for several years the event was classed at Group 2 level.
The Prix Jean Prat for older horses was renamed the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier
in 1985, and at this point the version for three-year-olds was promoted to Group 1 status. The race returned to Longchamp in 1986, and it began its current period at Chantilly in 1995. It was cut to 1,600 metres and moved to early July in 2005.
