The event was established in 1901, and it was originally contested over 2,200 metres. It was named in honour of Perth, a racehorse whose successful career had concluded the previous year. The race was initially held at Maisons-Laffitte

The present version of the Prix Perth began in 1949, when it was cut to 1,600 metres. With the exception of one edition at Longchamp in 1954, this version has continually taken place at Saint-Cloud. When the present grading system was introduced in 1971, the race was classed at Group 3 level. It was contested over 1,550 metres in 1978, but it returned to 1,600 metres the following year.
