The event was established in 1906, and it was originally open to horses aged two or older. Its distance was initially set at 1,400 metres. In its early years it was held at Maisons-Laffitte, which was then part of the former French department of Seine-et-Oise

The Prix de Seine-et-Oise was transferred back to Maisons-Laffitte in 1952, and simultaneously it was cut to 1,200 metres. When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, it was classed at Group 3 level. The minimum age of participating horses was raised to three in 1981, and for a period it took place in mid September. It was run at Chantilly
