Prix du Moulin de Longchamp
Encyclopedia
The Prix du Moulin de Longchamp is a Group 1
flat
horse race
in France
which is open to thoroughbred
colts
and fillies
aged three years or older. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 1,600 metres (about 1 mile), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early September.
. The other race, the Prix de l'Abbaye
, is still held at that meeting, but the date of the Prix du Moulin has since been changed three times. It was changed to the last Sunday in September in 1974, to the first Sunday of that month in 1980 and to the second Sunday of that month in 2011.
The event is named after the Moulin de Longchamp, a windmill
which stands within the grounds of the racecourse. This windmill was originally part of an abbey, and its foundation stone was laid by King Saint Louis
in 1256. The mill was destroyed during the French Revolution
, but it was reconstructed when the racecourse was built in 1856.
From its launch until 1986 the Prix du Moulin took place on Longchamp's middle course (the moyenne piste). It was switched to the main course (the grande piste) in 1987.
The race is often contested by horses which ran previously in the Prix Jacques Le Marois
. The most recent to win both events in the same year was Librettist in 2006.
