Procession of the Dead is a book written by Darren O'Shaughnessy (more commonly known by his pen-name Darren Shan
) that was originally published in February 1999 in the UK under the name of Ayuamarca. It is the first book in The City Book Trilogy
. It was re-released in March 2008 following Darren Shan's popularity under the new 'Procession' title.
The Cardinal - The most powerful and influential man in the City. His real name is Ferdinand Dorak. He has a strange fascination with puppets and believes in fate above all. His instinct is flawless.
Ama Situwa - Ama becomes Capacs love interest. She repeatedly broke into the heavily protected Party Central, base of the Cardinal. She also appears in 'Hell's Horizon'
Paucar Wami - An assassin working for the Cardinal. He had just returned to the City when he encounters Capac Raimi and classifies him as an Ayuamarcan, causing Raimi to become confused.
Adrian Arne - Designated driver for Capac Raimi. Talkative and humorous, the two of them become friends soon.
Y Tse Lapotaire - Former right-hand man of the Cardinal, but abandoned him in the past. Now, he provides Raimi with information on how to do his job in a way to please his boss.
Leonora Shankar - Owner of a fancy restaurant. In the past, she tutored the Cardinal and taught him not to rely on brute strength alone, but to use intelligence to rule the City. Leonora helped him to become what he is today.
Conchita Kubekik - A woman with a disease that causes her face to look like she was just a teenager, when the rest of her body is old and fragile. Unable to accept her appearance, she tried to commit suicide several times. In a hotel she meets Raimi and befriends him. Her husband is a gangster.

The City Trilogy was written for adult readers and was under the name Darren O'Shaughnessey originally, before the pen name Darren Shan was used for his children's books. The third book was originally never published, and the books went out of print until 2008...

Plot
The book begins with Capac Raimi jumping off a train to begin his new life as a gangster in a city he appears to despise. He keeps his ticket when he notices there is no one there to take it and decides he will show it to his children when he is older. After exiting the station he sees an odd anomaly; a single cloud raining in a very contained area. A blind man runs out and stands under the rain, he stares at Capac before returning to the crowd and vanishing. Capac hails a taxi and heads to his Uncle Theo's house. Theo was a gangster who lost his wife during the birth of their baby, who died shortly after. Because of this Theo went broke and turned to bad things, and his influence on other gangsters slipped. Eventually he pulled himself out of his pit of despair and rebuilt his small empire. Capac joins him as his heir and learns the tricks of the trade. Soon they get a deal that will aid them massively in the gangster business, Capac, Theo and three guards go to meet the gangster. Before anything can be arranged, Theo and the guards are shot dead by gangsters and Capac is taken to the head of all gangsters , the most powerful and influential gangster in the City, The Cardinal.Characters
Capac Raimi - A young and eager gangster. He has a talent for persuasion and was dreamed of by the Cardinal who believes he is special. Capac learns more about the tricks of the trade whilst in the City and comes to face difficult decisions in his life before fighting for it.
