Encyclopedia
Project Amicus was the codename for a new geosocial networking
app called Blendr
that allows users to discover, interact, and meet with nearby people with similar interests. The app was created by the makers of the successful app for gay men, Grindr
, the "gay bar of the 21st century" which boasts over 2 millions users in over 180 countries.
Project Amicus promises "an optimized interface that catalyzes human interaction." Grindr
creator and CEO Joel Simkhai said users can expect a unique mobile app experience unlike anything currently on the market that caters to how women and men communicate together. “Users love our existing location-based mobile experience, and we recognize the demand for a mainstream app... We’re thrilled to continue harnessing the power of location to deliver a compelling new global platform that fundamentally changes and improves the way we meet new people" said Simkhai.
The app was initially launched in the iTunes app store and as a Facebook app on September 8, 2011, under it's new name, Blendr
