, which oversees several other Alaska medical centers and long-term care facilities. With more than 3,000 employees, Providence Health System is the second-largest private employer in Alaska.

As of 2010, a $150.3-million expansion project that affects NICU, Prenatal and Mother-Baby Units, surgery, pharmacy, sterile processing, and materials management is in its beginning stages. It is named the Generations project because of the Providence commitment to care for generations of Alaskans. A Certificate of Need has been applied for, and construction is expected to start in January, 2011. Construction and renovation is not expected to be complete until 2014.

With the increased need and demand for physician services in Alaska, especially for specialists, Providence Alaska Medical Center continues its construction on expanded medical office buildings and parking for the new facilities, started originally in 2005.

Providence Alaska Medical Center is also transitioning to an Electronic Health Record (EHR) that patients will eventually have access to from their homes, their doctor's office, or wherever it is needed. Implementation of the new system is expected to begin in 2011.
