Encyclopedia
The Pulchri Studio is an important art institution and art studio based in The Hague
, Netherlands
. It began in 1847 at the home of painter Lambertus Hardenberg, established with the help of Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch
, Jan Weissenbruch, Willem Roelofs
, Jan Frederik van Deventer, Willem Antonie van Deventer, Jacob Jan van der Maaten and F.H. Michael. Bart van Hove became the first president.
Growing discontent among the young artists in The Hague about the apparently insufficient opportunities for training and development was the reason for establishing the Pulchri Studio. They wanted to provide an outlet for art intellectuals to model their work and to exchange thoughts and opinions.
The growing membership prompted the organizers to gradually expand and in 1901 it was moved to the building on the Lange Voorhout.
In 2004, a number of works from Pulchri were stolen, later recovered in 2007.
