The Puntland Intelligence Agency is the Puntland
Government's intelligence agency
. Established in 1991, it was known as the Puntland Intelligence Service, until it was renamed as part of reforms instigated by President Abdirahman Mohamud Farole
. Colonel Ali Mahamad Yusuf (Binge) was appointed Director General of the agency in March 2010. It is trained and supported by US counter-terrorism agencies via their branches in Djibouti. It is reported to be the strongest armed group in Puntland and took the lead in the 2010 Galgala campaign
. The PIA has been accused of inciting clan conflict and is reportedly particularly unpopular in Bosaso.
