The Program

The program has the form of a competition where someone in the panel shall try to speak a whole minute within a certain subject without breaking the rules. If someone of the opponents thinks they have heard something that break the rules they tell this through a sounding signal. The host then decide if the protest shall be accepted or rejected. If the protest get accepted the one who interrupted get the chance to speak the remaining seconds of the minute. In it is uncertain that the one of the rules have been broken the host can conform to "People's Court", i.e. the audience. Here the audience shall shout "Yes" to the participator who they think is right. The participator who get the strongest acclamation get the chance to speak the remaining of the minute.

At the end of the program the participant who collected to the highest score is announced as the winner. The price is often something edible.

Rules

There are three ground rules which the participants must follow:
  • Not to hesitate or punt.
  • Not to repeat him- or herself.
  • Not to leave the subject.

Removed rule:
  • Factual error.

Rules that have been added later:
  • Not to leave the premises. (Jokingly added by Lennart Swahn)
  • Not to steal anyone's approach to the subject.
  • Not to fraying at the edges (i.e. start snickering or laughing)

A combination of hesitation and diversification of the subject was introduced by Moltas Eriksson as homoeopathic dilution - a lot of words that doesn't say anything. Something like what Hans Rosenfeldt today calls "stacking of words without any meaning within itself".

Scoring

  • 1 point is given if a participant manage to take over the subject or if the protest against oneself is rejected.
  • 2 points is given if oneself manage to end the minute.
  • 3 points is given if oneself manage to speak the whole minute without interruptions.

But there have not only been edible prizes. Sometimes there have been musical teachers that have offered their services under the motto "Learn how to play a instrument under an hour". The contestants have never been able to choose which instrument they want to learn how to play, as this is decided before the show starts and the price is announced. The winner usually plays a small musical piece with the said instrument in the beginning of the program next time it is being recorded.

Differences from Just a Minute

The Swedish program has a slightly different interpretation of rules than the British.
  • In Just a Minute the participants are allowed to repeat the same word in different forms like "apple" and "apples", something the participants aren't allowed to do in På Minuten.
  • In Just a Minute the participants are allowed to repeat the words in the subject. If the subject contains the word "apple" the participant can say "apple" as many time the participant wants. In På Minuten the participant is only allowed to say a word once until he or she gets interrupted or finish the minute.
  • In Just a Minute the participants are not allowed to repeat a word for the whole minute, whereas in På minuten the participants are allowed to use the same words as many times they want within the same minute if they have been interrupted in between.
  • In Just a Minute the rule deviation from the subject is more strict than in På Minuten. It is often not allowed in Just a Minute to deviate from the truth, logic thinking or the rules of the English language.
  • The rule "Not to steal anyone's approach to the subject." does not exist in Just a Minute.
