Queens Gateway to Health Sciences Secondary School

Queens Gateway to Health Sciences Secondary School is a school in the borough of Queens, New York with emphasis on the health sciences. The school serves grades 6-12. It has recently been ranked the 34th best high school in the city of New York and is consistently given a silver medal by U.S. News for the quality of learning taught there. However, the school has been criticized for its lack of sports and extracurricular activities.

Mission

THE MISSION OF THE QUEENS GATEWAY TO HEALTH SCIENCES SECONDARY SCHOOL IS TO PREPARE ALL STUDENTS TO PERFORM PROFICIENTLY, EXCEED ACADEMIC STANDARDS, AND FIND PRODUCTIVE PATHWAYS TO KNOWLEDGE AS THEY LEARN TO LIVE CONSTRUCTIVELY TOGETHER. GATEWAY THROUGH THE COLLABORATION OF SCHOOL, HOME AND COMMUNITY STRIVES TO DEVELOP HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS IN AN EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS SAFE AND NURTURING. WE ARE COMMITTED TO THE USE OF APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTIONAL EXPERTISE,GUIDANCE SERVICES,ACADEMIC INTERVENTION SERVICES,AND THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT TEACHING AND LEARNING.

Advanced Placement Courses

The school offers AP World History, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Calculus, AP Physics and other AP courses to its high school students. Its AP Biology and AP Chemistry courses were cut in the summer of 2011 due to budget cuts. Queens Gateway is working on getting these courses back in the near future.

Special Programs

Programs which are college and career oriented include College Now, GEAR-UP, After School, Saturday Academy, Bridge to Medicine, PSAT and SAT preparation, Hospital Experience, Advanced Placement Courses, Accelerated Mathematics\Science.

Extracurricular Activities

Queens Gateway is currently working on getting athletic and extracurricular activities for the students to keep its students interested.

Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, Gateway Institute, Queens Hospital Center, York College, Queens College, and St. John's University.

History

The school moved to a new building for the 2010-2011 school year. The new building is located at 160-20 Goethals Avenue and has many new features. The school has a DNA lab as well as a library. The Rugby team named Gateway Gladiators is a new addition recently granted by PSAL. It was also granted Girls Cross Country and Co-ed Track & Field in the 2011-2012 year. The students wish to have sport such as basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and tennis in the near future. The school focuses on the health and medical fields, but offers it's students opportunities in whatever field they are most interested in. The school will be welcoming 6th graders in the 2011-2012 school year.

Middle School

The middle school students are welcome to participate in the CHAMPS program (Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated, Positive Students).
