to teach in the town. First known as the Convent School of Infant Jesus, it was chartered by the state in 1873 as the Saint Mary Institute.
For most of its history, Notre Dame was a girls' school. From 1940 to 1959 it temporarily accepted male students after the closure of the Quincy College Academy. In 1959, a boys' school was split off into Christian Brothers High School, which changed its name to Catholic Boys High School in 1970. In 1976 the schools re-merged and became the current Notre Dame High School.
