RED Scarlet
Encyclopedia
The RED Scarlet is an announced professional digital motion picture & still camera system designed and produced by the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company.

History

The RED Scarlet program was announced on November 13th, 2008 and upon announcement composed the less expensive half of the companies Digital Still Motion Camera program. The specifications that have been announced are a 3072x1620 pixel, 2/3 inch image sensor and an image processor capable of recording 120 frames per second in RED's proprietary format. The camera most highly anticipated will come with a non-removable 8X zoom lens [8x lens specifications : 28-224mm (35mm equivalent) T/2.4 throughout the zoom range] but a model which uses interchangeable lens will also likely go on sale. Prototypes of both models have been demonstrated publicly since 2009. When first announced the camera was expected to be sold in 2009 for $3000. Since then, the company has decided to add more features into the Scarlet which has increased the price. The company has also to focus on its more professional Epic line of cameras which has led to some delays of the Scarlet. As of September 2011, Jim Jannard has stated that November 3rd will be the day that the camera gets its announced changes, as well as begins shipping shortly there after. The RED Scarlet program previously included the larger S35 and FF35 sensors which are now part of the Red Epic program. The S35 and FF35 sensors were moved to the Epic program as they would not fit in the body used in the scarlet program.

Announcement

On November 3rd, 2011 the Scarlet X was announced with a 14 megapixel Mysterium-X sensor (same sensor as the RED EPIC) , capturing 4K motion at up to 30fps. It will ship with either a Canon or a PL lens mount in various packages.

Cost

It had previously been announced that the Scarlet 8x fixed would sell in a package with all of the modules necessary to make the camera function for $5750.. The Scarlet X is starting at $9750 with a Canon

lens mount.

Resolution

  • 5K (5120 x 2700): 1-12fps (HDRx 6fps)
  • 4K (4096 x 2160): 1-30fps (HDRx 12fps)
  • 4K QHD (3840 x 2160): 1-30fps (HDRx 15fps)
  • 3K (3072 x 1620): 1-48 fps (HDRx 25fps)
  • 1080p HD (1920x 1080): 1-60fps (HDRx 30fps)
  • 1K (1024 x 540): 1-120 fps (HDRx 60 fps)

At anything lower than 4k the camera will only record a window crop of the sensor so you will not get the full field of view of your lenses. Since it only shoots at higher frame rates than 30fps in sub-4k resolution this will mean you will need to change lenses or move back to get the same framing when shooting/overcranking for slowmotion (48fps, 60fps, 120fps).
