Rachel Hicks is a fictional character
on the television drama series Bad Girls
. She is potrayed by actress Joanne Froggatt
. Rachel only appeared in the first four episodes in the first series, even though she was a central character until near the first half of the series. Rachel was a 19-year-old girl who was serving over a year in prison for possession of drugs. She had a baby daughter, named Maddie to man who died of and over dose just before she was born and after Rachel ended up in prison, her mother took Maddie in. Not long after, Rachel's mother put Maddy into foster care as she was unable to look after her and wanted her life back, with this and other problems Rachel had to face, she eventually took her own life.
and her sidekick Denny Blood, who torment her and often try to force her to get drugs smuggled in. Officer Jim Fenner
sees that Rachel vulnerable and sees it as a way of taking advantage of her. Jim makes Rachel believe that she is special to him and they begin an illicit affair, unbeknown to Rachel that Fenner is already having an affair with Shell. Jim then has Rachel moved to a cell of her own on enhanced, right next to Shell. The more they become involved in this love triangle, the more Shell is on to Rachel and Jim. Even Nikki Wade warns Rachel off Fenner, but she doesn't listen. Not only is Shell forcing Rachel to bring drugs in, she is also physically harming her after discovering her affair with Jim. Rachel begs Fenner to get Shell off her back, but he doesn't care as he only wants her for one thing. Shell soon gives Rachel a warning, either she gets drugs brought in, or she will harm her baby. Rachel tells her mother to pick up the drugs before her visit, she tries to tell her that it's not drugs, but her mother knows better. When she comes to visit without the drugs, she also tells Rachel that she has put Maddie into care because she wants her life back. With everything thats going on with Rachel, she wrecks her cell and is seen by G-Wing governer Helen Stewart, who gives her a chance to explain herself, but Rachel is too scared to reveal she is being bullied, so Helen decides to be lenient with her and not put her in segregation because of the situation with her daughter and puts her back in the dorm with Denny and the others, which Helen doesn't know that it will do Rachel more harm than good, and segregation would be a safer option. Later, Rachel discovers that Fenner has been using her the whole time. During the night, Rachel is unable to sleep and Denny and Shell continue to torture her and Denny kicks her in the chest when she doesn't stop crying. The next morning, Zandra Plackett
wakes to discover Rachel has hanged herself. Helen Stewart tries to get to the bottom of why she did it. It was never truly discovered, but Shell, Jim and Denny know the truth and why she did it.
