Plot

The story is set in a small town in the Punjab, 'Dera-Bassi'. Ranbir and Rano live in Dera-Bassi, but Rano is from a conservative Punjabi family and hence has limited exposure with the outside world. Her father is the station master of Dera-bassi and it is one day, on her way to 'Dharamsala' that she meets the man who is to become a part of her life – Ranbir. What transpires after is what dreams are made of – sweet moments between the couple, feuding households, and love that outshines the toughest of all obstacles.

Ranbir (age 25)

Is the son of a wealthy man. Is in love with Rano. Was getting married to Rano when the wedding stopped, due to his dear sister Guddo being pushed from the roof.

Rano (age 22)

Is part of a middle class family. Never saw her mother as a child, and is tortured by her stepmother. She is so sweet and gentle in nature. She also loves Ranbir.
Her wedding is stopped when Guddo falls, but she knows that Sukhi didn't hurt Guddo. So she promises Preet that she will prove Sukhi's innocence within a week.

Sukhi (age 21)

Is Rano's stepbrother, cruel and greedy. He steals, thieves and lies.
When it is Rano's wedding he is blamed for pushing down Guddo from the roof and Preet charges him, sending him to jail.

Mr. Gurucharan (age 72)

Is Rano's real father, kind, sweet and caring. Loves Rano dearly and regrets marrying Kamla realizing what she is really like.
Later on he runs away from home because Rano's wedding was stopped. But when Rano and her uncle find him he thinks that Rano did get married. He has turned a little mental.

Kamla (age 58)

Is Rano's horrid stepmother. She hates Rano and blames her for everything and anything that goes wrong. She prevents Rano's marriage to Ranbir because it would reduce Sukhi's inheritance and make Rano more important.

Guddo (age 16)

Is Sukhi's wife and Ranbir and Vicky's sister. She has a mind of a child and Sukhi and Kamla misuse this and get her married to Sukhi. She isn't used to cooking, cleaning and housework but learns this when she comes to her husbands house. She is mistreated and burns her hand, which becomes an issue with her family who know that Sukhi only married her for her wealth and inheritance.

Preet (age 35)

Is Ranbir's older sister who hates the name of love and despises Ranbir and Rano's relationship, insulting them constantly; however, when Ranbir almost leaves, she offers Rano shagun and acceptance as the daughter-in-law of the family. She wants Vicky and Tina engaged and married. One day Preet overheard Tina telling Ranbir of her love for him, and determines to marry them to one another. She bribes Rano's stepmother to stop Ranbir and Rano's wedding.

Vicky (age 29)

Is Ranbir's older brother. He is introduced trying to kill Rano for insulting his father, however Nimmi intervenes and Rano escapes. He is seen as a loving, caring and kind older brother because he adores his younger sister Guddo; however, he is constantly fighting with Nimmi and insulting her and Rano, including Rano's family. When Ranbir and Rano get engaged, he continues fighting with Nimmi, which causes him to discover he is in love with her.

Nimmi (age 24)

Is Rano's best friend since childhood; she fights off Vicky and his gang when they try to kill Rano and supports her relationship with Ranbir. She has many encounters with Vicky who mistreats her and Rano. When Ranbir and Rano become engaged the sparks begin to fly. She finds she is falling in love with Vicky.

Tina (age 21)

Is Ranbir's "ex-best friend" as she falls in love with him due to her sister Shanno constantly trying to get her to replace Rano's spot in Ranbir's life. Ranbir wants Tina to get married but Tina fancies Ranbir.

Shanno (age 26)

Is Ranbir's "Bhabhi" and Tina's sister, wishing for her younger sister Tina to get married to Ranbir. Tries to stop Ranbir from getting married to Rano.
