The depot is situated to the west of Reading station

. It is located within the triangle of lines formed by the Great Western main line

The depot is on two levels. The upper depot is used for the cleaning and fueling of locomotives at night, it is also used for stabling units ready for the next day operations. The lower depot is used for heavy maintenance and exam work on 165,166 units, but has also been used to work on 142,143,150,153,158 from the west country. EWS and Freightliner Class 66 units use the depot for refueling. Track maintanace machines are also stabled in the sidings from time to time.
