Rebel Youth
Encyclopedia
Rebel Youth is the bilingual magazine of the Young Communist League of Canada
published in the late 1980s and restarted in 2005. The name Rebel Youth is from Cuba's
youth newspaper, Juventud Rebelde. It was adopted after the publication's previous title, New Horizons, had to be dropped due to a complaint from the Canadian federal government that was, at the time, operating a housing program with the same name.
The earliest publication out of the YCL and predecessor of Rebel Youth was The Young Worker, a newspaper that specialized in working class youth issues. Many university libraries carry microfilm archives of The Young Worker due to the government's department of labour intelligence branch obtaining copies of the paper and archiving them.
In response to the shift towards a united front strategy with other left groups, a relaunched magazine Advance replaced the Young Worker.
Recently the Ligue de la Jeunesse Communiste has started publication of a French language magazine Jeunesse Militante to compliment Rebel Youth.
