The Red Line is the 28.3 kilometres (17.6 mi) north-south mass transit line of the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit

. It is the first mass transit line built in southern Taiwan, started construction on October 24, 2001 and opened for service on March 9, 2008 with a month-long free ride service to April 6.
There is a plan to extend the line north to Luzhu District. This would add 6 stations to the line.
