At the age of 7, Mastin was diagnosed with glue ear syndrome, a condition that is caused by a chronic build-up of fluid in the middle ear and is the biggest cause of hearing loss in young children. Mastin never had any formal musical training and discovered he could sing just by singing along to his favourite songs on the radio. Before entering The X Factor in 2011, Mastin had already recorded his own EP
