He previously served at a number of Episcopal churches, including St. John's Church, Wilmington, North Carolina; Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio; Holy Trinity Church, Greensboro, North Carolina; Christ Church, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Grace Church, White Plains, New York; and St. Peter's Church, Baltimore, Maryland. In 1944, he was awarded a D.D. by Nashotah House Theological Seminary.
