It was founded as a parliamentary group by defectors from the then governing National Unity of Hope

in 2008. It was officially registered as a political party in 2010. At the end of the 2007-2011 legislature, the Independent Renewed Democratic Liberty parliamentary bloc included 25 out of the 158 deputies in the Congress of the Republic

In the legislative election
on 11 September, LIDER won 8.9% of the votes and 14 of the 158 seats in Congress. In the coincident first round of the presidential election, Baldizón won 1,037,939 or 23.2% of the votes. Thus, he could qualify for the runoff against former general Otto Pérez Molina on 6 November, but was defeated by the latter with 1,980,819 or 46.26% of the votes.
