The name of the commune is a corruption of Erembauldocurtis (which comes from "Eremboldus" = (skilful or bold leader) and "curtis", meaning a fortified house). Eremboldus was the name of several male members of the Ribeaucourt family, vassals to the abbey of Saint RiquierRicharius
