Plot

The movie takes place in Charleston, South Carolina

, where the Odom family lives in a large, white, Southern house. The movie is about teenager Lucille Odom (Erbe) who is in her last year of high school when mother, Helen Odom (Clayburgh), leaves the family, breaking all ties, and with Lucille being left in the care of her father, Warren Odom (Finney). The family then spends the summer trying to get their lives together, which is complicated when the older daughter of the family, Rae (Amis), moves back home with a husband (MacLachlan) and a new baby on the way, about whom Rae has mixed feelings.
