Hanke began his career with Dynamo Dresden
, and broke into the first team in 1995, when the club had been relegated to the Regionalliga Nordost
. He spent five years playing for the club at this level, and was top scorer in his final season, but the club were relegated to the NOFV-Oberliga, and Hanke left for Carl Zeiss Jena
in 2000. After one season with Jena, he spent two years playing for 1860 Munich's reserve team, and a further two with FC St. Pauli
, whom he helped win the Hamburger Pokal
in 2005, scoring the winning goal in the final. He left St. Pauli shortly after that, and after a few months without a club, he returned to Dresden
, to sign for FV Dresden-Nord. After a season and a half, he moved again, joining FSV Zwickau
, where he spent one season before retiring in 2008.
