Geography

Riein has an area, , of 15.8 km² (6.1 sq mi). Of this area, 21.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 37.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.9% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (39.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).

The municipality is located in the Ilanz sub-district of the Surselva district. It is located at the entrance to the Val Lumnezia
