Prior to the 2009–10 basketball season, he recorded a freestyle rap about SU basketball called "Shut It Down". After players asked him to hear it, the song quickly became the motto of the team. It has been adopted by fans, as well, and can be found on thousands of shirts and signs throughout the Carrier Dome. Proceeds from the songs go to charity.

College coaching career
Murphy joined Kent State in 2002 as an assistant coach. The Golden Flashes were 21-10 overall and 12-6 in the Mid-American Conference in 2002-03.
