Fatal injury

Carter suffered greatly with injuries at Southampton. It was there where he sustained a career-ending blow to the head from which he never fully recovered. Carter returned to Sunderland with his wife, Clara. However the head injury ultimately proved fatal and he died on 9 March 1928.
