He succeeded on the death of his cousin Jonathan Charles Frederick

. He was granted a pension by the British government of £1,785 per annum.
He was heir apparent and head of the royal house until his death.
He died after an operation at the Public General Hospital in Kingston in Jamaica on the 6th of January 1908. He was married once to Irene Morrison. He had two children, one of which was a princess: Mary Clarence. He was succeeded as head of the royal house by his cousin Robert Frederick.
