He was son of Matthew Lamb of London, and nephew of Peniston Lamb, who left him a fortune, as did his father, a prosperous attorney. He was educated at Enfield, Middlesex under Robert Uvedale, and matriculated at Trinity College, CambridgeTrinity College, Cambridge
