from 1862 to 1864. As a slave owner he was an ardent supporter of the confederacy. He died of malaria in 1872. Unfortunately his home later burned, destroying all his letters and papers.
Jones was the wealthiest man in Indian Territory. He owned plantations in Arkansas and Louisiana. He owned several dozen stores and three river boats.
