Earl starred as a tailback at Kent-Meridian High School
in Kent, WA despite his 6'5" 240 lb frame more typical of a lineman or tight-end. At the University of Washington, his career started as a tight-end, but once again he proved valuable when switched to running back for his final three seasons. He was drafted in the third round by the Chicago Bears, where he played full-back blocking for Walter Payton
