Robot Torg
Encyclopedia
Torg was a robot character in the 1964
Christmas movie
, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
. In the movie, Torg attacks Santa's workshop, and is finally turned into a Christmas toy. It appeared to have been crudely constructed from cardboard, silver paint, glue-on controls, and ducting work for arms. In the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of the movie, the Torg is described by Crow as, "A guy in a cardboard box with a coffee urn on his head", and Joel laments that "The polar bear was better than this," referring to an obviously fake bear that come before the Torg. It has been suggested that "Torg" is derived from "Gort", the name of a robot from the 1951
movie The Day the Earth Stood Still.
The robot is an object of minor cult references from other artists, such as by the electronic group The Laziest Men on Mars, and was named among the five worst movie robots ever created.
