The village is in Higgins Township
in the northern part of Roscommon County. Roscommon Township
is in the southwest part of the county. The Roscommon post office, with ZIP code
48653, also serves the northern portion of Higgins Township, as well as all of Gerrish Township
to the west, most of Lyon Township
to the west of Gerrish, and smaller portions of Lake Township
to the south of Lyon, Markey Township
to the south of Gerrish, Au Sable Township
to the east of Higgins and also the southern portions of South Branch Township
and Beaver Creek Township
to the north in Crawford County
. Roscommon is located in the center of northern Michigan's lower peninsula. It is near Higgins Lake, Houghton Lake and Lake St. Helen. Roscommon is accessible by the two major freeways: I-75 and U.S. 127. The Roscommon post office first opened January 9, 1873.Home of the Roscommon River Festival, hundreds of numbered plastic ducks are dropped off the M-18 Bridge and race to the lower end of Wallace Park for $2,000 in total prizes. Proceeds from this event go to fund numerous Rotary Club community projects. Free activities for the kids include fishing for magnetic fish, face painting, canoe painting, and tie your own fly and sawdust pile. One of the most popular activities is the amateur dock dog big air competition; all dogs can compete in this fun filled event.
It was named after the town and county of Roscommon
in Ireland

The 15th through the 18th of September, the 32nd annual Michigan Fireman's Memorial Festival will be going on. Fire Chiefs, Fire Fighters, EMS and thousands of friends and family from all over the United States and foreign countries will gather in September in memory of the valiant Fire Fighters who gave the supreme sacrifice of their lives while protecting their communities. The festival begins at the Roscommon County Fire Training grounds(formally known as the Roscommon Fair Grounds.)

The racial makeup of the village was 96.03% White, 1.24% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.44% Asian, and 1.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.18% of the population.
There were 436 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.2% were married couples
living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% were non-families. 40.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the village the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $28,229, and the median income for a family was $33,929. Males had a median income of $29,844 versus $18,875 for females. The per capita income
for the village was $14,746. About 19.3% of families and 21.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.4% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
