in June 2007. He was previously Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly
from 1999 until 2007.
He ran successfully for reelection as River State governor on 26 April 2011.
Amaechi was born in Ubima, in Ikwere local government area of Rivers state, and is an alumnus of the University of Port Harcourt
.
His wife, Judith Amaechi
is active in promoting improvements to the status of women and children, and is sponsor of the Empowerment Support Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO), that provides practical support and advice, particularly for the most disadvantaged.
In the April 2007 Rivers State elections, Celestine Omehia
of the People's Democratic Party
(PDP) was at first declared governor, but his election was later annulled and Chibuike Amaechi, also of the PDP, was declared governor.
The decision of the Supreme Court to substitute Amaechi in place of Omehia was controversial.
Amaechi ran successfully for reelection on 26 April 2011.
He polled 1,178,529 votes, while the runner-up Celestine Omehia of the All Progressives Grand Alliance
(APGA) scored 112,528 votes.
