She was born in Romania but came to France at a very young age with her parents. Maracineanu's first international success came in 1997, when she won two medals (silver and bronze) at the 1997 European Aquatics Championships in Seville, Spain. A year later she became world champion in the 200 m backstroke in Perth, Western Australia
. After having missed qualification for the 2004 Summer Olympics
, she announced her retirement from the sport of swimming.
