during Gordie Howe
's rookie season in 1946–47. Howe wore #17 that season. During the last years of his NHL career, Conacher, his wife Fran, and their children, had moved to Midland, Ontario. Following his retirement, he coached the 1953–54 Midland Red Wings to the Ontario Hockey Association Jr. C championship. It was the first - and remains the only - provincial Jr. C title for the town. A member of Conacher's junior team, Jack Hendrickson, went on to play in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings. In 1996, Roy Conacher was selected as one of the inaugural inductees (Athlete category) of the Midland Sports Hall of Fame.
