McFaul began creating short films while growing up in suburban Maine
. He and his friends called their production company Pig Pat Productions, named after a stuffed animal mascot.
McFaul attended New York University
's Tisch School of the Arts
, where he studied Film and Television Production and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree.
McFaul began his career as a commercial editor, and in 2003 transitioned into directing.
