of the face. This muscular system is manipulated during facial
cosmetic surgery, especially rhytidectomy
. The SMAS extends from the Platysma to the Galea Aponeurotica and is continuous with Temporoparietal Fascia and Galea. It connects to the dermis via vertical septa.
involves a full muscular system lift all over the face where the work is done on the deepest (third) layer. This deep facelift surgery procedure is meant to reduce the appearance of sagging jowls, cheeks and neck skin. The operation is far more advanced than a skin or endoscopic facelift type of surgery. It takes into consideration the facial configuration of the patient in three dimensions to preserve the individuality. Ability to perform a SMAS type of surgery requires fundamental knowledge of the facial nerve, plastic surgery and microsurgery.
