The SMS Stein was a sailing ship of the Kaiserliche Marine
, later converted to steam turbine. She was a 'Gedeckte Korvette' (lit. Covered Corvette), also called a 'Kreuzerfregatte' (Cruiser Frigate), of the 1877 Bismarck class. She was laid down at AG Vulcan Stettin in 1878 and launched on 4 September 1879, entering service the following year.
