The commune is located in the north-west corner of the Dordogne department. The village is located 55 km (34.2 mi) north-west of Périgueux

. Most of the area is woodland, the remainder of the area is made up of farmland, mainly producing beef, cereals and other crops.

History

From the creation of the departments in 1790 Saint-Mesmin was first included in the Corrèze department. Three years later in 1793 it joined the Dordogne department. During the Napoleonic Wars
