Damon Welch, in an interview with Mass Movement Magazine stated "I’m really into history and had just finished reading Edward Gibbon’s ‘The Decline And Fall of the Roman Empire when I began the writing process for this album so that’s what was on my mind at the time...I still love some good ole Satanism myself, I just don’t know enough about it to write a song. Whatever makes for an interesting album is good enough for me."
