Bringing up her children, she gradually became better at writing fiction and hired an agent, Elizabeth Roy. Cold Tom, her first novel, won two awards: Branford Boase Award
and the Smarties Prize Silver Award
in 2002. Later published novels include The Devil's Toenail (2004) and Ryland's Footsteps (2004). The Truth Sayer (2007), the first in a trilogy, was nominated for the 2007 Guardian Award
